Use Science to Conquer Your 2019 Resolution

Use Science to Conquer Your 2019 Resolution

Stop!  Before going any further with your New Year’s Resolution you need to read this blueprint by Susan Shain on how to achieve your goal.

In her New York Times article, How to Crush Your Habits in the New Year With the Help of Science, she talks through 7 important points to consider when setting a goal. Two that I find to be EXTREMELY important to the success of your goal are:

  1. Begin with the end in mind. People often confuse their action plan for the goal. This is an important distinction as doing so limits your options in achieving your goal.
  2. Be patient.  Rather than stopping a habit, try changing a habit.  To do this you need to understand how the trigger/action/reward habit loop works.  If you can identify your triggers and can be prepared to take a new action.

I encourage you to invest the time to read this short article and reflect on how to apply the principles to your New Years resolution. The payoff will be worth it!
