2019 Wellbeing Trends to Watch

Written by Jessica Mandot

The wellness industry has changed a ton since I joined way back in 2010. And it's showing no signs of slowing down. With new technology coming online everyday, changes in employee needs and regulations, the pace won't be slowing down anytime soon. If you're looking to make changes or enhancements to your company's wellness program in 2019, here are 4 key areas to consider.

Technology

In 2019, we’ll see a lot of the enhancements from 2018 continue, especially along technology and connected solutions. From Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to Peloton and MIRROR, smart phones and home systems are part of our everyday lives. These tools will continue to grow and become the hub for managing your life and wellbeing. Through the Internet of Things (IoT), we’re also seeing more connected biometric devices like blood pressure monitors and glucose meters hit the consumer marketplace. Look for these integrations to be more commonplace in wellbeing and condition management programs in the future.

Financial Health

Financial wellness continues to be a popular program add-on for many wellness programs. The trainings of the past are now available both online and in person, and with the majority of American adults not saving enough for retirement, financial wellness programs continue to be a favorite among employees.

If you have more than 500 employees, you may be eligible for this Financial Wellness training at no cost.

Total Wellbeing

Health and wellness has recently taken a more holistic approach including topics like brain health, resiliency, recognition, and stress management. Removing the stigma around mental health and focusing on mindfulness will be making a larger appearance and impact in wellness programs. Be prepared to hear more about how healthy habits like exercising and good nutrition impacts your brain health and are key to stress management, sleep and resiliency.

Medical Management

With the job market booming, we see traditional wellness programs being used for employee retention, and expect that trend to continue into 2019. While wellness programs are still used to proactively identify health risks and improve overall wellbeing, specialty programs like Diabetes Management and Advocacy are being implemented with the focus of driving down healthcare costs and support patients in navigating the healthcare system.
