A Day in the Life of Coach Shawna

Written by Sienna McGuire

You may think our health coaches easily hit their workout goals, eat healthy, and always have it all together. But, guess what? They struggle with the same challenges as the rest of us! Coach Shawna is a busy, single mom with two active boys. She sticks to her exercise routine, hits her work deadlines, and spends time with her kids. This comes with a ton of preparation, organization, and of course - hard work! After she recently topped the leader board for an internal HealthCheck360 wellness challenge, we asked her to share her secrets! Here's a look at how she manages her day.

I feel so energized when I exercise in the morning before heading to the office. I feel accomplished and in great spirits all before 8:00 AM! It's hard to get out of bed early, so I make it easier by setting out my clothes the night before, and packing my (and my kids') breakfast and lunch ahead of time. I also choose workouts I enjoy! If it's not something I like doing, I'm not going to get out of bed for it. So I make sure I have a workout planned at the gym or in my living room with a workout video.

While at the office, I make sure I'm drinking enough water to keep my energy up. I also have nutritious snacks in my desk drawer and my lunch is waiting for me in the fridge. Preparation is key!

My lunch break is a great time to eat a meal, but also to get outside for fresh air and sunshine. I keep a pair of tennis shoes under my desk so I can get outside for a walk. This gives me a mid-day energy boost and allows me time to de-stress and focus my thoughts. I make sure I have sunglasses, podcasts downloaded on my phone, and I'm set!

The evenings are crazy at my house! My two sons are in after school sports and activities, which means I have little time to make dinner. I plan our meals ahead of time, meal prep over the weekend, and I always look for meals I can make with limited equipment. The simpler, the better!

9:00 PM

I commit to going to bed on time, no matter what. This ensures I'm well rested and ready to wake up and get my workout in. This also means I have to accept that I can't always be Wonder Woman. I may not get all the house tasks done before bedtime and that's okay. Set a bedtime and stick to it. Most likely, the other tasks (like dishes or vacuuming the floors) can wait until the next day. Make rest a priority tonight and it'll help you hit tomorrow's goals.
