A Healthy Dose of Nature

Written by Sienna McGuire

In honor of Earth Day, we’re here to talk about the power of Mother Nature. There's a natural and free way to improve your immune system, lower stress, gain mental clarity, sleep better, boost your mood, and it's right outside your door! Spending time in nature is linked to better health and it takes as little as 10 minutes to reap the benefits. Read on for 5 simple and fun ways to add more outdoor time to your routine.

Start a Family Walking Routine

Spending time outdoors can be a great way to connect with your spouse and kids. You can take your dog for a walk, chat about your day, and get some movement in after dinner. Find a walking trail, a nearby park, or just walk around your neighborhood. You might even find your kids are more relaxed and willing to share about their day when they're able to walk and talk.

Re-imagine Weekend Trips & Vacations

Take your next vacation outdoors by planning a camping trip, visiting a national park, or hit the beach or lake for swimming, canoeing, and campfires! You'll develop family traditions and create memories your family will appreciate for years to come.

Explore New Places

Exploring new places is a great way to refresh your perspective and spark creativity. You might discover a new hobby or a fun new way to spend time with friends and family. Check out local bike paths, fishing spots, forest trails, and other areas you have never been to before. Remember to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat and applying sunscreen, and always pack a snack and water for longer outdoor trips.

Outdoor Sports

Join a local sports team during the summer months! Playing sports is a great way to exercise, make new friends, and relieve stress. Check your community newsletters for basketball teams, tennis courts, sand volleyball meet-ups and games at the baseball field.

Create an Outdoor Sanctuary

Find a spot outdoors that brings you peace. Maybe it’s planting a garden in your backyard, creating a peaceful place to sit on your deck, or simply finding the perfect tree to sit under at your local park. You can bring music, a book, journal or nothing at all! Put your bare feet in the grass, smell the fresh flowers, and enjoy the warm sun on your face. Simply spend time soaking up the natural peace nature has to offer.

No matter how you prefer to spend time outdoors, the benefits are endless. So what are you waiting for? Get out and explore!
